HOW AND WHEN THE IDEA BEGAN THAT DRINKING ALKALINE WATER IS GOOD FOR YOU Warning - The Answer Is Not Going to Please Everyone
Fact: Chlorine and Fluorine, being Halogens, are two of the most reactive (read oxidizing) substances known to man.
Fact: Being highly reactive, both Chlorine and Fluorine are listed as being extremely toxic by the EPA.
Fact: Chlorine and Fluorine, being such strong oxidizers, are two of the most "Alkalizing" substances known to man.
Fact: Chlorine and Fluorine destroy living tissue.
Fact: Both Chlorine and Fluorine are routinely being added to your municipal drinking water to "protect your health".
OK, now that we know those facts, what have they got to do with the question of how and where the whole idea that drinking Alkaline Water is good for you came from?
Many years ago, the United States Environmental Protection Agency determined that the best way to sterilize the nation's drinking water was to add chlorine bleach to it, which makes sense because chlorine is such a powerful killer of bacteria, as we all know, even though many other nations figured out far better and even cheaper ways to accomplish the same goal. The problem is that chlorine is also extremely toxic.
Please keep in mind that the essential probiotics in your gut are also bacteria, so they too are killed every time you drink a glass of chlorinated water, not to mention the oxidative stress the chlorine causes to all of the other cells in your body, which stress has been scientifically implicated in a plethora of metabolic diseases such as heart disease, arthritis and cancer.
Shortly after the decision was made to add chlorine, the EPA also decided to add fluorine compounds to the water to "protect your teeth", over staunch opposition from the American Dental Association at the time (1937), I might add. Obviously, the ADA has since reversed their original scientifically-based decision by caving in to extreme industry and government pressure, and for no other valid reason.
But after doing this, the EPA realized that it had a problem. You see, being strong alkalizers, the addition of the chlorine and fluorine raised the pH of the water to levels much higher (read dangerous) then were considered safe at the time. So how did the good folks at the EPA deal with this obvious dilemma? Simple really, they just went ahead and raised the pH standard levels of our drinking water even though no studies had been done to prove that the new higher levels (that are still in place today) were safe.
So that is where it all started...
Now let's fast forward to today. Whenever you ask anyone in the "Alkaline Water" industry for scientific validation of their claims that drinking Alkaline Water is good for you, they almost always lead you right back to the EPA "test results"!
